Wow. With Peggy Olsen officially behind her, Elisabeth Moss continues to demonstrate—ever more intensely—that she is an actress willing to plumb strange depths to build a character. Queen of Earth presents her as Catherine, a woman having a really hard time after the death of her father and subsequent dumping by her boyfriend. To get some R&R, Catherine retreats to a vacation house with her best friend, but when a local love interest starts to disrupt her peaceful getaway, Catherine starts spiraling into a very dark place. One of Moss' greatest strengths as a performer is her ability to switch fully between a character that is quietly and tightly controlled into one that is being ripped apart from the inside out. It's an impressive bi-polar swing, and this role seems engineered to put that talent on full display.
