After a Twitter promotional campaign that had users teaming up to unlock a video, the first trailer for the Goosebumps feature film adaptation has arrived, and it outlines how Rob Letterman’s film will shoehorn in all the various creatures from the 62 books in the original series. Jack Black stars as book series author R.L. Stine, who lives with his niece Hannah (Odeya Rush) in a house that looks more like a fortress. New neighbor Zach (Dylan Minnette, the President’s son from Scandal) sees fit to free the object of his affection. But wait! It's actually a meta-adaptation: all the material for Stine’s young adult novels are supernatural beings, trapped inside locked manuscripts that are accidentally freed to wreck havoc, Jumanji-style, throughout town. Kid appeal? Check. Parental appeal? Quite possibly, if said parents read the YA series growing up. Weirdly enough, this may manage to toe same nostalgia line that catapulted Jurassic World to a record-breaking opening weekend earlier this summer—and the studio clearly knows it. But we read all of Stine’s books growing up and he's a great interview, so we’re willing to overlook the marketing ploys and just get excited.
