Here is a short story, in the style of Dr. Seuss.
“Hip hip Hooray!” yelled young Timmy on that crisp autumn day.
His Mom replied“Why such jubilation and celebration so joyous?”
“Don’t you know the day? Don’t you know the time? Haven’t you heard?
It happens but twice a year, the day of the equinox is here.
On this day magic happens. The planets align and the stars sign. You can do just about anything.
Look at me jump. So high, so high. I could compete in the Olympics, I could oh my.
And look over there, up in the air! An egg balanced on a broom on top of a flea’s tippy top hair!
If I had one, I could balance a boat. I could balance goat on that boat while he swam in a moat. I could do anything on this equinox day.”
Timmy’s Mom hated to be a stick in the mud, but Timmy should know for the sake of the good.
“Dear Timmy, it’s so great that you are excited. However son, have you tried it? Have you tried balancing an egg on a broom on whatever you said zoom? Have you found a boat and a goat and a moat to experiment on?
Maybe you should start small. Just start with a broom. Balance it over there and then we can try the flea’s hair.”
So Timmy tried. He tried the broom, it didn’t work. He tried the egg, it was a bust. “But why? Why wouldn’t this work? I read it on the internet, it’s got to work.”
Timmy’s mom explained: “The Vernal Equinox is indeed a day, but mostly it just has to do with night and day. In the summer, on our part of the Earth, we are tilted just a bit towards to the Sun to make day long and the day short in Perth (on the other side of the Earth).
In the winter, the daytime’s longer in Perth and shorter on our side of the Earth. So there you see, the equinox is just in between these two times.
In fact on this day, the nighttime and daytime are the same length you can say. But you can’t do magic on the Equinox, now go outside and play.”
Bonus: You can't even balance a broom when the planets are aligned. Well, you can - but not because of the planets.
__Double Bonus: __The word "equinox" essentially means equal day and night.
