Nürburgring Track Record Obliterated — In a Videogame

Behold, the fastest car ever to run the Nürburgring's Nordschleife track. Virtually, anyway.

Behold, the fastest car ever to run the Nürburgring's Nordschleife track. Virtually, anyway.

Red Bull head designer Adrian Newey, the genius-cum-madman who built the last four cars to win the Formula One World Championships, designed the Red Bull X2014 concept car for Gran Turismo 6 -- unburdened by silly things like driver safety, tire compounds, and aerodynamic regulations.

Now, the lap record for a real car is 6:47:50, set by the Pagani Zonda R -- though there are rumors that the new McLaren P1 got close to the 6:30 mark -- but YouTuber Junasaken managed to cane his Red Bull X2014 around the track in an unbelievable 3 minutes 38 seconds, getting close to 300 mph on the few straight sections of the track. Of course, the G-forces would probably cause the driver to black out and defecate himself, but safely defying death is what video games are all about.

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the longest racetrack in the world by a wide margin. Nicknamed "The Green Hell" by Sir Jackie Stewart, the track traces more than 100 corners over 14 miles of Deutsche countryside. It's extremely popular amongst amateur racers, as anyone with a valid license can pay a "toll" to drive around the thing. Sports car manufacturers build entire cars solely to set a fast lap time and nearly every automaker has an R&D facility within spitting distance of the 'Ring. All that said, we won't be seeing any real cars getting around the track in anywhere near the mid-three-minute mark, but you can see the Pagani's record-breaking 6:47:50 run below for some context.
