One of the most heart-wrenching moments of Gravity is when Sandra Bullock’s Ryan Stone finally makes contact with Earth – only to find out she hasn’t reached NASA, just a guy on a radio. Now you can watch the short film made by Jonás Cuarón — who wrote the film his father Alfonso Cuarón directed – showing what happened on the other side of that radio transmission.

“It’s this moment where the audience and the character get this hope that Ryan is finally going to be OK,” Jonas, 31, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Then you realize that everything gets lost in translation.”

Titled Aningaaq, the seven-minute companion film will be released as part of Gravity’s Blu-ray edition and it is almost just as gut-turning as the scene in space from the original film. It’s so heartfelt, in fact, that studio Warner Bros. has now submitted it for consideration for a live-action short Oscar, according to THR. Watch the full short above.
