Get ready: Telltale Games said today that the second season of its critically acclaimed adventure game series The Walking Dead is coming soon, and that the player character will be... Clementine, the girl you had to play surrogate-parent to during the episodic game's first season last year.
WIRED (along with over 90 other outlets, Telltale says) named Walking Dead our game of the year last year after it became a breakout success for Telltale. Sticking the player in a position where they had to make serious choices that might have major repercussions down the line in future episodes turned out to be a compelling gameplay formula, and who knows – maybe some of the things you did as Lee during season one will affect how Clementine reacts to the world around her in this season.
Now, the question is: Can lightning strike twice? The novelty of the world was able to draw players into the first season, but will another five episodes be able to deliver surprises the same way now that we've been through a cycle? Moreover, Telltale is actually running two episodic series nearly simultaneously – its series based on the Fable comics, called The Wolf Among Us, just saw its first episode. (Which, I should say, was pretty great.)
Having finally had its big hit, it's now Telltale's job to keep the momentum going.
