Everyone seems to be hopping onto the smartwatch bandwagon, and the latest entrant is Nissan. Yes, the automaker.
Nismo, the Nissan's motorsports arm, has developed its own wearable concept that connects with Nismo-tuned vehicles, including the Nissan GT-R and Juke, over Bluetooth Low Energy. That provides the driver with average speed and fuel consumption, vehicle telematics and performance data, and maintenance messages from Nissan. Exactly what you'd expect. But Nismo goes a step further and integrates a heart rate monitor that correlates with the speed and G-force meter.
The smartwatch is the manifestation of what Nissan's Nismo Lab has been working on over the last year, combining advanced biometrics and telematics data from its race car drivers into something for the track-focused Nissan owner. But for now, it's just a concept, despite the automaker touting a seven-day battery life, three colors, and going to so far as to develop packaging made out of rubber cribbed from used race tires.
