Last April we wrote about a new $750,000, 4K ultra high-definition, gyro-stabilized, helicopter-mounted camera rig being used to shoot an epic ski film, Way of Life. The film's production company, Teton Gravity Research, has several well-known ski and snowboard videos under its belt. For months the crew has been off shooting and editing while we waited to see what they would do with the new technology.
Now we know. On August 14, TGR posted a trailer for Way of Life on YouTube so viewers could get a sense of what kind of footage they’ve been capturing with the high-end rig. Included in the gear-orgy is a portable five-axis camera platform (Gyro-Stabilized Systems’ C520) that works with a variety of 4K cameras, including the RED Epic.
“It really blew our minds,” is how TGR co-founder Todd Jones summed up the system.
We recommend watching the trailer at 1080p in fullscreen on the largest display you have. Even then it will only be a fraction of the definition of the final film when displayed on a 4K screen. The footage is nonetheless breathtaking, and ski nerds across the country are probably already salivating.
According to TGR, the film will premiere on Sept. 21 at the Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village, WY and will be released on iTunes and DVD/Blu-ray soon after.
