Acura has been promising an NSX supercar successor for the better part of a decade, and after relentless teases that eventually culminated in two concepts, we finally get to see it action.
On August 4, Acura will trot out its first development prototype at the Honda Indy 200 IndyCar race at the Mid-Ohio circuit in Lexington, giving the public a taste of the all-new supercar slated to go on sale in 2015.
Acura isn't saying how the NSX is going to compete with the latest breed of hybrid supercars from Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren, but that's because they don't plan to. Instead, the NSX is going to be a more affordable supercar -- like the original -- with a V6 mounted amidships and an electric motor powering the front wheels. The drivetrain will be pulled from the automaker's RLX flagship, which features a 310-hp 3.5-liter V6. But Acura is bringing out a more performance-oriented RLX later this year with a three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system. That's going to make it go faster, grip harder, and provide some all-wheel-drive comfort. For the NSX, Acura is basically flipping it around to make a mid-engine supercar. And hopefully they'll throw a few turbos on that V6 to boot.
