Matt Damon Back-Talks Robots, Fights for 99 Percent in New Elysium Trailer

The latest trailer for Neill Blomkamp's dystopian class war flick looks pretty freaking awesome. Also, it's surprisingly funny.

From what's been revealed so far about Neill Blomkamp's upcoming action flick, it's shown itself to be a futuristic dystopian battle between the haves and the have-nots. But what wasn't know was that it might also be kind of funny. Turns out, it's got jokes.

In the new extended trailer for the flick, a cueballed Max De Costa (Matt Damon) gives a bit of lip—and his best robot impression—to what appears to be his android parole officer. This particular parole meeting comes after he attempted to banter with a robo-cop (why would you do that?!) about the "hair products" in his bag. See? Jokes. Of course, after this opening scene we realize that almost nothing about the world of Elysium is even remotely funny.

Set in 2154, Elysium takes place in a future where the wealthy have left Earth to live on an elite, well-guarded space station—handled by Secretary Rhodes, played by a kick-ass-looking Jodie Foster—while the poor toil away on what's left of the planet. Apparently on the verge of death, Damon's character gets a massive tech upgrade and heads to the pristine playground of the rich (named Elysium) in an attempt to right some wrongs.

It's been four years since Blomkamp's last film—the gritty and epic alien flick District 9, which he directed and co-wrote—and expectations are high for Elysium. Judging by this latest teaser, it looks like those expectations just might be met. Here's hoping. Elysium hits theaters August 9.
