The age of underpowered integrated notebook graphics is over. Prepare your eyes for awesome.
Intel announced Wednesday that its fourth-gen Intel Core Haswell processors will include its new Iris Graphics technology. What this means in something other than marketing-speak is the processors will deliver twice the 3-D performance for the ultrabook U-series and mid-level H-series processors and three times the 3-D performance boost for desktop R-series processors. All that PC gaming you've been told you can't do on a laptop? Yeah, you can forget about that. You'll be able to play Bioshock Infinite on your laptop without it looking like 1990's-era Nintendo games.
If you're more the video-editing type, Iris supports faster processing of OpenCL 1.2, DirectX 11.1, and OpenGl 4. Plus it'll handle 4K Ultra HD display resolution and three-screen collage display. This all looks great for gamers and video editors. Unfortunately, we have to wait until Intel actually releases the next-generation chips that will handle Iris.
Intel will release its Haswell processors June 3 at Computex.
