If you're a regular GeekDad reader, you undoubtedly know that we're big on Google doodles. Besides the cool references to pop culture, science, key historical figures and events along with daily happenings, Google has also involved kids in the action. As Jenny Williams pointed out last year, the company has a yearly competition where kids of different age groups submit their own doodles in a competition that has significant stakes. For the 2013 version, this includes having their doodle appear on Google's home page, along with a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school.
In cooperation with Discovery Education this year's "Doodle 4 Google" competition includes a virtual field trip, a behind-the-scenes tour of Google's campus with a visit to the facility where the engineers and artists come up with Google doodles. If you or your kids are interested in seeing how those Google doodles are created and seeing the Googleplex firsthand, register here for the virtual field trip. It takes place this coming Friday (March 1). There will also be information provided on entering the "Doodle 4 Google" competition.
In addition to the peek at the process of bringing Google doodles to life, two artists at Google will be undertaking a live "Doodle-off" with the students on the virtual tour voting to determine the winner. If you've ever wondered how Google manages to come up with these doodles day after day, here's your chance to find out and see the team in action.
