Gadget Lab Show: Basis Activity Monitor Band

This week on the Gadget Lab show, Mat Honan shows off the Basis, a wearable activity monitor in the form-factor of a watch.

Much like the FitBit trackers (Zip, One, and the upcoming Flex), JawBone Up, and Withings Smart Activity Tracker, the Basis band monitors your sleep, the number of steps taken, calories burned and more. It has sensors to measure your skin temperature, perspiration (yep, it tracks your sweat), and your blood flow. It then uses these measurements to get a better idea of your physical activity. It’s especially useful for fitness activities that don’t necessarily have a ton of upper body movement, like yoga or cycling.

Basis does not have a standalone mobile app — all of your information is accessible through web apps. You have to sync the phone to the desktop app in order to actually view your activity. It costs $200, and is available for pre-order now.

Mat’s full review of basis is coming soon, so keep an eye out!
