Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki teamed up with his son Goro Miyazaki for the upcoming (English-language) film release from Studio Ghibli From Up on Poppy Hill, and with the help of the new English language trailer (above) we have ascertained what everyone already expected: It. Looks. Beautiful.
Set in the harbor town of Yokohama in the years Japan was pulling back together after World War II, Poppy Hill tells the story of a young girl named Umi who has lost her father in a shipwreck and is sending secret semaphore flag messages in the hope of getting a response. She meets a boy named Shun, but according to the synopsis a secret from the past threatens to split them up.
Co-written by Hayao and directed by Goro, the English-language version of the film has top-shelf voice talent including Gillian Anderson, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christina Hendricks (eff yeah, red!), Ron Howard, and – pleasant surprise – *Parks and Recreation'*s Aubrey Plaza.
A new trailer typically isn't much to go on, but the luxuriously long two-and-a-half-minute one (above) for Poppy Hill gives the indication that this film could be stunning and on par with Ghibli's other classics like Arrietty, Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away.
