Most cringe-inducing press conference goes to Hyundai. But the HCD-14 concept could be a Best of Show.

Suicide doors, a phenomenal interior and a face that’s going to influence future premium products from Hyundai.

But awkward name and styling aside, the entire infotainment system is gesture based and – amazingly – fully functional. Make a twisting motion with your hand and the volume increases; swipe left and right to scroll through tracks or radio stations; pinch and twist to change the head-up display mapping. We don’t buy it until we try it, but color us intrigued.

Think “four-wheeled appliance” and the Corolla inevitably springs to mind. Toyota wants to change that and the Furia concept is the first step. It’s got all the required concept car flare: a wide stance, a bright paint job and preposterously large wheels. None of which will make it to production. And then there’s the rear roof line which would charitably be described as… original. Still, it’s nice to see Toyota taking a few chances, even if falls flat on its face.

What happens when you subtract 2 from 3? You get 4. That’s the kind of fuzzy math BMW is employing with the new 4 Series coupe. For whatever reason, the suits in Munich have decided to kill the 3 Series coupe and replace it with an all-new badging scheme. Going forward, the 3 Series will be four-door models and the 4 Series will be two-door models. Makes perfect sense, right?

Regardless, like most BMW concepts the 4 Series is nearly production ready. All it needs are some new mirrors, a tweaked front fascia and a more commute-friendly interior. And naming BS aside, it’s probably one of our favorite BMW coupes since the E46.

What’s better than an Audi A7? The S7. What’s better than that? This. It’s the Audi RS7, with over 500 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, this just became the fastest fastback this side of a Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

Initi is in the midst of a rebranding kick. Gone is the G, FX, M and EX models, which will all be replaced with new Q-based monikers. This is the first of the new breed, the Q50, which grabs the baton from the entry-level G brand. V6, eight speed automatic and available all-wheel-drive make up the major specs, but the real innovation is a completely electronic steering rack that has no mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the wheels. We’ve also been told that the Q50 will have an all-new infotainment setup that puts a premium on apps. ‘Bout damn time.

Iears past, Chrysler would kick off the Detroit show with some utterly outrageous spectacle.

Tntroduce the new Ram, they corralled a few hundred head of cattle, marching them down Washington Blvd. in front of Cobo Hall, complete with cowboys leading the heard. The previous year, the head of Jeep drove a Wrangler through one of the hall’s windows to introduce the latest version of their rough-and-tumble off-roader.

Htimes have changed.

Aoday’s opening press conference, Jeep showed off a mildly refreshed Grand Cherokee (now with diesel power) and a few rehashed crossovers with new grilles and trim. No pyrotechnics. No laser-projected waterfall. Just a bit of awkward pomp and circumstance, which speaks volumes about where Detroit’s been and where it is today.
