First, we had an ATV that goes on water, now we’ve got a Ural motorcycle and sidecar that’ll sit in the drink without leaking. All you have to do is paddle.
The Yamal Peninsula is an inhospitably cold region in Russia, just north of Siberia. Icebreaker ships with double hulls and juggernaut strength are known as Yamals, the namesake and chief inspiration for the motorcycle.
The bike has a sidecar festooned with fog lights, a painted shark borrowed from its seafaring brethren, and fenders and a body double-coated with a waterproof 3M polymer. No, Ural doesn’t really want you to plunge into the Bering Sea with your bike, but the motorcycle will handle itself on land. The 749cc boxer engine puts out 40 horsepower, and it rides on 19-inch knobby tires with a spare on the trunk and on-demand two wheel drive. A Brembo brake on the front brings it to a stop, hopefully before you hit the thin ice, and a Sachs suspension gives cushioning and feedback. It even comes with a reverse gear.
Fifty examples will be coming to the United States, each available for $14,250, paddle included. The bike is available now, but only in high-visibility orange.
