Up until now, if you pinned anything on a Pinterest board it would be visible to everyone. Your favorite fall fashion trends, the furniture you wished you could afford, or the cupcakes you planned on baking -- Pinterest made all your boards public.

Not anymore.

While the public boards didn't seem to hold the site back, users frequently asked for a private option. Now there is one. On Thursday, Pinterest released Secret Boards, a feature that lets users pin in private.

"We hope that secret boards will make Pinterest even more useful," Pinterest software engineer Evrhet Milam wrote in a blog post. "You can use secret boards to keep track of holiday gifts, plan a special event, or work on a project you aren’t yet ready to share with the rest of the world. You can keep your secret boards to yourself or invite family and friends to pin with you."

Pinterest is rolling out the feature by letting users create up to three secret boards. Users can choose to keep the board entirely private to themselves or invite select collaborators to work on the boards with them. The secret setting can be turned on and off, but only for new boards. There currently is no way to turn previously made boards secret.

The feature is accessible via Pinterest's website and its iOS and Android apps.
