Brad Mangin (@bmangin) has quickly become the king of the baseball Instagram. A veteran sports photographer, he's been lighting up Insta with snappies from the nine Bay Area playoff games with his iPhone, which he says has become one of his favorite cameras.
"It's hard to describe the adrenaline rush I get when I shoot a picture with my iPhone 4S that I think will make a good Instagram," he says. "I feel like I'm on deadline and can’t wait to type up a caption and send my picture out."
Mangin made history during the season when Sports Illustrated published 18 of his baseball Instagrams over six pages in the magazine and today he's still sending his stuff out on the magazine's official feed (@sportsillustrated). Now that the first World Series game will be held on his home turf, it's turning out to be a good year for him.
"It's been a blast," he says.
As a sports photographer who's known for his sports action, he says it's been a nice change to be able to think in terms of the moments and details that happen away from the baseball game itself. He's been shooting more player portraits, paying more attention to color and challenging himself to compose for the Instagram square instead of the traditional DSLR rectangle.
"I've really loved proving to people that it doesn’t matter what camera you use," he says.
All that thinking outside — or perhaps inside — the box has paid off, and Mangin recently signed a book deal with Cameron + Company, who in April will be publishing a book of his baseball Instagrams from this year entitled Instant Baseball.
"I'm happy with what I have so far this postseason and can’t wait to see what I get during the World Series," he says.
