National Halloween Costume Swap Day -- How Brilliant!

This weekend is National Halloween Costume Swap Day. I never knew there was such a day, but I'm all for it. Even parents who skimp on clothes for school sometimes throw the budget right out the window when it comes to dressing up like a superhero, a fairy or a furry creature.

Halloween is approaching fast. In just a few weeks, your home will be inundated with pumpkins, vampire teeth and miniature versions of your favorite candy bars. Best holiday ever! It also means that you should probably start thinking about pulling together those costumes.

This weekend is National Halloween Costume Swap Day. The nationwide event is just what it sounds like. All you need to do is find an event in your area, bring a costume, and get ready for some swapping.

I never knew there was such a day, but I'm all for it. As parents, we don't seem to want to spend a lot of money on clothes for school, sports or special occasions. However, when it comes to dressing up like a superhero, a fairy or a furry creature, some of us throw that budget right out the window.

Costumes can be insanely expensive, too. Angry Birds, Harry Potter and Batman can all be had for around $25 each. Some costumes cost even more. However, Green Halloween and KIWI Magazine want to help families save that money, while saving a few resources at the same time. After all, there are so many wonderful, barely-worn costumes out there in need of a new home.

On Saturday, October 13, Green America's Green Halloween program will be sponsoring swaps all over the country. There are schools, libraries, businesses and even families that have all offered to host the events.

To participate, you're going to need a costume – to swap, of course. Don't worry about sizes or the age of the costumes. Just make sure each one is clean and in good condition. Don't give away something that you wouldn't want to receive!

Next, find a National Costume Day event near you. This is a really important step, since some of the coordinators are hosting swaps on alternate days or several swaps throughout the month. It's also important to note that some of the locations require participants to drop off costumes prior to the day of the event, in exchange for a voucher. Find the one in your area for all of the information, which may also include admission fees. Yes, since some of the events are located in museums or other public places, admission fees may be required. Those same locations may also have snacks or other activities set up, so plan accordingly. Happy swapping!
