Remember the adorable children's book store owned by Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail?

Well, according to the internet, the store has a real-life counterpart. And they could use your help.

Books of Wonder in the Chelsea section of Manhattan is the oldest and largest independent children's bookstore. No, they're not about to be forced out of business by an evil superstore chain owned by Tom Hanks. However, the store is currently running an Indiegogo campaign, hoping to raise $100,000 to "revitalize, refurbish, and renew" their longtime home. Here's their story:

When we moved into our current space eight years ago, we leased out 40% of the space to a well-established NYC bakery to provide a cafe for our customers. Unfortunately, the Great Recession was even harder on cupcakes than children's books and they were forced to close, still owing us many months back rent and utilities. ... This has strained our resources and, although still able to operate , has left us without the resources to refurbish and renew the store — as well as in a precarious position should there be another unexpected downturn.

The exciting thing is that, even if, like me, you're just discovering the store because of this campaign, you can give them a hand and treat yourself to a cool piece of children's book art at the same time! For only $10, you can claim as a premium a postcard designed by "some of the most beloved and talented authors and artists working in children's books today." Some were created specifically for the campaign; others were selected (with permission) from recent books. But most come from the Books of Wonder autograph book, a souvenir of the visit of their favorite authors and illustrators. There are more than 85 altogether, and the store promises that they will never be sold. They are an exclusive gift for supporters to their campaign.

At higher levels you can receive other premiums, including original children's book art; personally inscribed volumes from authors like Norton Juster and Brian Selznick; and signed first editions of Caldecott and Newbery winners including Rapunzel by Paul O. Zelinsky (one of my favorites!) and The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Camillo. The gift that tempts me the most is a specially designed pop-up Thank You card from Robert Sabuda.

As of this writing, the Books of Wonder Indigogo campaign is already a third of the way towards its goal, so prospects look bright. But if you want to get in on the cool premiums, you have to make up your mind before the deadline–November 21. Go pick out your favorites now!
