Can a radically reduced diet extend lifespans? The science is tantalizingly conflicted. Sometimes calorie restriction does improve longevity -- and sometimes it doesn't.

That tension came to a head late in August, when researchers reported that monkeys on a calorie-restricted diet didn't seem to live longer than their regular-diet peers. Just three years earlier, another monkey study had found precisely the opposite effect.

On Sept. 20 at 12 p.m. PST/3 p.m. EST, ScienceNOW will host a live chat with gerontologists Julie Mattison of the National Institutes of Health and Ricki Colman from the University of Wisconsin, the leaders of the monkey studies.
