Table tennis may not be the most popular sport to tune in to, but Paralympian David Wetherill made it the sport to watch at the 2012 Paralympic Games with an incredible rolling dive shot during his match against Thomasz Kusiak of Germany.
The shot is so amazing that it hardly matters that the Briton lost the match. Wetherill took table tennis to its physical limit during Friday's bout, literally throwing himself across the floor to make a shot that Kusiak had no response for. Table Tennis Daily — yes, really — called it "one of the best table tennis shots ever," and who are we to disagree?
Wetherill, who has a genetic bone development disorder called multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, tweeted, "Table tennis is an instinctive sport, may never play a shot like it ever again. Fight for every point, was never letting that one go."
The 22-year-old student-athlete is ranked number 5 in the world, despite his disappointing 3-1 loss to Kusiak. This is his second Paralympic Games — he competed in Beijing in 2008 and hopes to be in Rio in 2016.
Wetherill started playing table tennis as a kid in his hometown of Torpoint in Cornwall, where his parents are physical-education teachers. He graduated from the University of Sheffield last year and, aside from his superhuman table tennis skills, is your average 20-something who likes watching Chelsea football and playing video games when he's not training.
