That’s because the sneak-peek features Gary Anthony Williams as the imposing Mutant Leader declaring war on Gotham City and threatening to rip the meat from Batman’s bones and suck them dry. Toon diehards should recognize voiceover kingpin Williams as the equally profane, but less physically imposing, Uncle Ruckus from Aaron McGruder’s indispensable Adult Swim adaptation of The Boondocks.
Williams has also played the bloodthirsty shark terrorist Riff Tamson on Cartoon Network’s darkly awesome Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as the conscienceless supervillian Mongul in the surreal but sadly defunct Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In other words, he fits The Dark Knight Returns ‘ youngest, toughest big bad guy like a spiked collar on a punk.
Screen the reel above and judge for yourself. Or wait until Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part One — the first film from the animated double feature — arrives Sept. 25 on DVD, Blu-ray combo pack, On Demand and download. Whichever you choose, let us know in the comments section below if you’re stoked or ashamed that Miller’s legendary comic, which kickstarted Batman’s Hollywood takeover in the ’80s, is finally turning up as a straight-to-video toon rather than a live-action blockbuster.
