Samsung's rumored Galaxy Note II smartphone may be getting closer to daylight. On Tuesday, the South Korean electronics maker released a YouTube teaser video of a new Note device and hints of an Aug. 29 announcement.
The 38-second clip features narration by German director Wim Wenders (known best for the film Wings of Desire), talking about creativity and inspiration, as the camera zooms in on Samsung's S Pen stylus running over a phone display. It ends with a teaser for Samsung's Aug. 29 Unpacked event at the the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.
If Samsung does launch a Note II smartphone in Germany, it may preempt the debut of Apple's next iPhone, which is rumored to be set for Sept. 12. The latest product in Samsung's Note lineup, the Note 10.1 tablet, went on sale in the United States on Aug. 15.
Samsung has tended to reserve the "Unpacked" label for events that mark the unveiling of major new devices, like the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S III smartphones. As for a new Note phone, speculation has so far centered on a new hardware design and a larger screen.
The first-generation Note features a stylus and massive 5.3-inch screen, something we found to be too big for practical daily use one a phone. Despite being a dud with many critics, however, the Note caught on with consumers. Samsung has sold about 10 million Notes since launching the device last October.
