Getty Whiffs on 20-Gigapixel Opening Ceremony Image

Getty Images announced last week that it would create a giant 20-gigapixel image of the stadium during the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics in London. The image was then supposed to be uploaded to the Getty Images UK site overnight. The next morning, however, the image was nowhere to be found.

Getty Images got a lot of people's attention last week when it announced that it would create a giant 20-gigapixel image of the stadium during the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics in London.

The image was then supposed to be uploaded to the Getty Images UK site overnight.

The next morning, however, the image was nowhere to be found.

In an email statement, a Getty spokesperson said, "Due to unforeseen technical difficulties around crowd movement, Getty Images were unable to capture a suitable Gigapixel shot of the Opening Ceremony that met our high quality standards. However, plans have been put in place to capture four other Gigapixel images throughout the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games.”

When asked for a more detailed explanation of what went wrong the spokesperson had no comment.

Whether the four additional images will materialize remains to be seen.
