I regularly browse through the Lego Cuusoo website to look for new geeky gold nuggets to support. Quite surprisingly, many very impressive projects seem to be left behind. The latest one I came across, and with still very few votes (mine was number 160), is this Death Star II clock. You may have guessed why this project caught my attention: as a member of the GeekDad crowd, the combination of Lego and Star Wars has always won me over.
The attention to detail in this sculpture gives a fairly impressive result, especially given the reduced amount of bricks - or plates - used to build this space station clock. This is not the first attempt at the Death Star II, Lego even has an official set for it, while my favorite remains the one from Lego artist Nathan Sawaya. This Death Star II clock reminds me very much of Sawaya's and the limited number of bricks does not steal anything from its geeky charm. If ever voted for Lego review (10,000 votes), this clock would be the perfect accessory on every discreet geek's office desk... as opposed to the Imperial Star Destroyer.
The designer, alias WWWally, needs an extra 9,840 votes to get his project reviewed by the Lego group, so still quite a long way to go. But I believe this idea could actually have a shot at making it into a product. It is fairly small, therefore marketable for a decent retail price (even with license) and Lego has released clocks before.
So if you are tired of being late for meetings as well as hiding your secret geek identity from co-workers, then you might want to support this project.
