As a kid, the surest way to move me from the TV to the outdoors was to tempt me with making and creating things. Glitter immediately upped the ante. Nowadays there are so many fun and interesting tutorials all over the web, but where should one look to find them?

Jan Halvarson of the design blog Poppytalk is a master of rounding up crafty and fun projects for all ages. Her site is a veritable bazaar of beautiful and fun things to do for the whole family. I asked Jan to share with us a handful of her favorite DIY projects for children in the summer months.

1.Newpaper Forts - Roll up some newspapers for this incredibly fun fort-making idea. It's a perfect indoor activity for the next rainy day. (see above)

2. Paper Flower Ball - A fun little project where you can fashion a colorful orb from smaller circles of paper.

3. Lego Key Holder - This cute key adornment was making the rounds a bit early this month, but it's such a great idea for kids.

4. Yarn Fonts - This is fun yet simple DIY that can become home decor. Create big colorful initials with just yarn and pipe cleaners.

5. A Superhero Terrarium- While this terrarium is a super idea for comic fans, it has the power to delight a much wider audience.

6. Shadowbox Collage - Make a 3-D collage shadowbox that is cool enough to hang.

7. Tiny Polymer Clay Planter - Hang an adorable miniature plant in an even cuter pot of your own design.

8. Spray Paint T-Shirts - Pull out the spray paint and duct tape - time to go crazy! Bonus: You get to wear your creations.

9. Print your own fabric with inkodye - This project uses a photo-sensitive dye to develop painted fabrics in the sun.

10. Gold Leaf Geometric Necklace - A super-easy jewelry project using polymer clay and gold leaf. Make one for everyone!
