Last year I wrote about the "Tropes vs. Women" videoblog series hosted by Anita Sarkeesian on the Feminist Frequency site. The series explored “the reoccurring themes and representations of women in Hollywood films and TV shows” and now Anita plans to create a new series focusing on the roles of women in video games.
"Tropes vs Women in Video Games" will look at the limited ways in which women are portrayed in video games. The project is being funded via Kickstarter and managed to become fully funded within its first 24 hours. Additional funding is now being put towards making even more episodes for the series (and it this point there are still over three weeks left to go!) The initial five episodes/tropes planned for the series are:
- Damsel in Distress
- The Fighting F#@k Toy
- The Sexy Sidekick
- The Sexy Villainess
- Background Decoration
However thanks to the extra funding we can now also look forward to:
- Voodoo Priestess/Tribal Sorceress
- Women as Reward
- Mrs. Male Character
- Unattractive Equals Evil
- Man with Boobs
I can't wait to see the new series, especially how it tackles some of my favorite video games, so I'll be watching this project with bated breath.
