Nintendo is lowering the price of the DSi to $100 and DSi XL to $130, it said Thursday. The new prices go in effect on May 20. The two handheld consoles currently cost $150 and $170, respectively.
While the DSi handhelds have a successor on the market in the 3DS, Nintendo has continued to support the older system line with games like Pokémon Black and White, Kirby Mass Attack, and the upcoming Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.
Since the Nintendo 3DS suddenly dropped in price last summer to $170, three of Nintendo's handhelds were crowded around the same price point. This move alleviates that jam, although it puts a question mark on the future of the $100 Nintendo DS Lite. Will that machine, soon to be six years old, get a price drop of its own? Or is this the signal that it will be quietly retired?
