Captain America stands stoic and strong behind his red, white and blue shield in the latest Avengers character poster from Mondo and Marvel.
The image, by Toronto-based indie studio Phantom City Creative, deftly captures the spirit of the Star-Spangled Avenger. The poster is one of four striking pieces of promo art for the upcoming superhero movie unveiled Wednesday by Mondo. You can see Martin Ansin's thunderous vision of Thor at Movies.com, Kevin Tong's take on Iron Man at io9 and Ken Taylor's raging Hulk on Badass Digest today. Black Widow and Hawkeye were revealed last week; a forthcoming print featuring the entire Avengers team will complete the seven-poster series.
"We've become very attached to doing Marvel movie posters over the past few years, specifically for Avengers-related characters, so working on the upcoming film is a huge dream come true," said Mondo Creative Director Justin Ishmael in a press release. "The participating artists have really brought some of their best work ever to the table. If you want to see the different styles the Mondo crew is capable of, look no further than this series – we couldn't be happier with it."
The Avengers poster series is the latest collaboration between Mondo – the barn-burning art boutique run by the movie mavens at Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas – and a big Hollywood studio. Such deals are a major prerogative for the indie art purveyor, Ishmael told Wired earlier this year during the grand opening of the Mondo Gallery.
Mondo's highly coveted broadsheets have sparked a resurgence in poster art, with a heavy emphasis on sci-fi and geek-culture films. Mondo has previously commissioned artists to reimagine Star Wars movies, put a new spin on classic Star Trek episodes and pay tribute to fan-favorite directors like Guillermo Del Toro and Duncan Jones.
Even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has taken notice: The Oscars organization now archives one copy of each limited-edition Mondo print.
