New Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Trailer Portrays Presidential Axe-Slinger

Fans eagerly anticipating the cinematic adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter are starting to get a few tastes of the upcoming film, even if its director is remaining relatively mum.

Russian director Timur Bekmambetov barely said a word during a recent WonderCon 2012 panel, but author Seth Grahame-Smith had plenty to spout about the big screen adaptation of his novel. And thanks to a new trailer (above) there’s some video to let Bekmambetov’s work speak for itself.

“The more I read, the more I realized that Lincoln’s real life story is a super hero origins story,” Grahame-Smith said. “Lincoln had to overcome all this darkness like the death of his mother, yet he pulled himself up by the boot straps to save the country.”

Vampire Hunter’s latest trailer pits the axe-wielding president (‪Benjamin Walker‬) against 2,000-year old master vampire Adam (Rufus Sewell). (Graheme-Smith said he created Adam for the movie in order to furnish Lincoln with a memorable adversary.) The new trailer also features a fiery freight train sequence that did not appear in the original novel.

Action fans will notice that the new footage trafficks in the same kind of slo-mo carnage featured in Bekmambetov’s 2008 direction of Wanted. The beheadings may seem unusual, but according to Grahame-Smith, there’s “no winking at the audience…Timur wanted to make sure the vampires seemed real.”

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, produced by Tim Burton, opens in 3-D on June 22.
