Storyboard Podcast: Modern Speakeasies and Bacon-Infused Whiskey

Head to St. Marks Place in the East Village then look for the red and yellow “Eat Me” sign. Take the steps into a hole-in-the-wall hot dog joint called Crif Dogs. Walk past three arcade games, then veer left. When facing a bathroom and a phonebooth, choose the latter. Pick up, dial in. It’s a lot of effort but, then again, it’s worth the rigmarole if you’re in search of bacon-infused whiskeys or buttered popcorn-flavored rum.

NYC-speakeasy PDT (Please Don’t Tell) remains physically hidden, but it earns plenty of attention for its part in the city’s bar and cocktail revival. Drinks International named PDT the best bar in the world for 2011. And last fall the bar released The PDT Cocktail Book, a collection of recipes and strategies.

Founding bartender Jim Meehan joined Adam Rogers on this week’s Storyboard to dive deep into both the bar and the book gaining so much notoriety. The two talk about Meehan’s bartending background, concepts for the ideal bar and cocktail design, and the transformation of NYC drinking culture. Also there is some nostalgia for late 1990s Manhattan.

No matter when you listen to this episode, it’s probably 5 p.m. somewhere. Luckily, you now know where to find a stiff drink.
