For still photography, the D4 boasts a new 91,000-pixel meter, versus about 1,000 in previous models. In addition to more nuanced light and color readings, this increased sensitivity means the auto focus can recognize objects and even faces. It can lock onto subjects even when they or the camera are in motion.
On the HD video side, the D4 offers a crop function that increases the effective focal length of whatever lens you’re using, with no drop in resolution. The highest crop setting boosts your picture 2.7 times. That means that if you’re shooting through a 300mm lens, your effective focal length will be 810mm. But you’ll still be getting full 1080p HD at 30 fps.
All this muscle will cost you, though. The D4 body goes for $6,000.
