TVOvermind is putting the fears of Community fans to rest and reports that NBC is not cancelling the show. Community last aired a new episode before the holidays with no word of the sitcom returning, prompting an outcry from its loyal fans. Community crusaders even staged an “Occupy 30 Rock” demonstration to demand the show’s return and demonstrate how much it is loved.
Why is it so adored? Community is wacky and eccentric. The sitcom boasts a fantastic cast, including Chevy Chase, Joel McHale, and Ken Jeong. The real scene-stealers, though, are Danny Pudi and Donald Glover, who play Abed and Troy respectively. Troy and Abed are unabashed geeks; in fact, the show flaunts its geekdom regularly.
Just this season alone:
- We got a glimpse of alternate timelines created by the simple roll of a dice.
- Troy and Abed are hooked on the Doctor Who spoof Inspector Spacetime, which even comes with its own holiday special.
- Two characters engaged in a foosball match so epic that it turned into anime.
And that’s not including the paintball episodes, the Claymation episode, the Dungeons & Dragons episode…
While Community might not be everyone’s cup of tea – it is unconventional, especially for a non-geek -- the show mixes spoofs and gimmicks with actual character development, a rare feature for a sitcom.
There are just a few shows that I look forward to watching every week, and I’m happy to hear that Community will be one of them again soon.
