It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for fans of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic. First there was that PonyArchive.org debacle and then The New York Times mixed up Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy (for shame). What the world needs now is some time to sit back and make their own pony.
Flash game Pony Creator (embedded below) allows users to do just that. Pick a body, add some wings, tack on a horn, choose a shape, go to town. And, yes, you can even alter the eyes to make them go all Derpy Hooves if you want.
More interestingly, Pony Creator allows for color palettes different from the pink and purple pastels of the typical ponies, allowing for more diverse creatures.
“My Pony Creator wasn’t the first, but I decided to make my own version after seeing male fans of the show complaining about not being able to create male ponies in the games that were out,” the program’s creator Haley Reeve said in an e-mail to Wired.com.
The idea came, Reeve said, after creating a zombie pony and realizing that most ponies had very similar body shapes.
“I think it’s important that people have the option for giving their characters a variety of body shapes, since in most media (including, unfortunately, the female ponies in My Little Pony) we only see very limited body types,” the 24-year-old IT specialist said. “Granted, I’m not sure how well that message comes across when the bodies in question are ponies, but if MLP can convince a lot of grown men that media aimed at girls can be just as good as media aimed at boys, then I think there’s potential.”
