I saw a delightful tweet from The Weather Channel this afternoon. It seems they have received the green light to film a documentary about the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, better known as the Hurricane Hunters.

The Weather Channel's press release can be read here.

I'm so excited about this! Although my excitement is tempered by this being another The Weather Channel "long form original program" that takes away from their original charter: providing up-to-date weather information to their viewers. In recent years, the network has ventured into more long-form original programming, perhaps as a response to advertisers who would prefer to invest in viewers who watch more than "Local on the 8s".

Having been a fan of The Weather Channel from when I was about ten years old, I've been slowly disillusioned by this migration from information to entertainment. The HuffPostTV blog once caught my disdain in 2010 when The Weather Channel was continuing to air their "Flick and a Forecast" during a tornado outbreak.

Nonetheless, I think this Hurricane Hunters documentary is a Weather Channel long-form original program I can be interested in!
