With high-tech home viewing technology and studios that continue to push 3D, the desire to visit movie theaters has fallen to an all time low. Yet every now and then, an event comes along that sends you marching right back to the big screen. The works of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli definitely qualify, and the New York International Children's Film Festival is giving theater-goers fifteen reasons to grab a ticket.
Starting today and running through January 12th, you can catch many of Miyazaki's best films on brand new 35mm prints. The most critically acclaimed titles — Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service — will all be showing, but the retrospective event also marks the North American premieres of Only Yesterday and The Ocean Waves.
All of the showings will be held at the IFC Center at 323 6th Ave in downtown Manhattan, and tickets are available on the GKIDS website. If you have a preference for subtitles versus dubbing, pay attention to showing times. Japanese versions with English subtitles will play starting at 6PM each night, while prior showings will use English-dubbed audio tracks.
