In the full trailer, we see the heroic John Carter forced to battle blue-blooded Martian monsters and meeting a damsel in distress (has Taylor Kitsch ever sounded more like Friday Night Lights‘ Tim Riggins than when he says, “Yes, ma’am”?).
From the looks of it, director Andrew Stanton (Wall-E) is going for a film somewhere between Gladiator and Avatar — battling barbarians, unworldly love stories, etc. His sci-fi epic based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom series shows promise, and it looks like Kitsch might have what it takes to carry a movie on his own.
The visuals of Stanton’s movie, which tells the story of a Civil War veteran who is transported to Mars and thrown into an outer space conflict, look pretty stellar (why can’t our computer monitors be 100 times bigger?). The extraterrestrial terrain that Carter finds himself trekking on — and the beings he encounters there — look like they could be really impressive on the big screen.
Unfortunately, it’ll be a while before we can see them there. John Carter hits theaters March 9, 2012.
