If you've been thinking about buying a new 4G-capable smartphone, but haven't had quite enough inspiration to pull the trigger, Verizon wants to give you a nudge. The nation's largest cellphone carrier is now offering a slate of deals that give you double the data for the same prices as before.

Customers who buy a new 4G smartphone can now get 4GB of data for $30 per month, 10GB for $50 and 20GB for $80 -- and, yes, each plan provides a 100 percent increase in maximum data before extra charges kick in. The new plans offer much relief for people who frequently bust their measly 2GB or 5GB data caps, or have been avoiding excessive data use out of fear of extra fees.

Verizon's "double data" plan is only available to new 4G smartphone purchasers for a limited time. Once you're on the plan, however, you're grandfathered in for as long as you own a 4G smartphone on Verizon.

And if you're fuming because you just bought a new 4G Verizon phone, fear not: Those who just upgraded their service, or got a new 4G phone in the past two weeks, are also eligible for the upgrade.

Verizon eliminated its unlimited data plan in July, and, like fellow iPhone provider AT&T, now only provides tiered data plan options (unless you're grandfathered into an unlimited plan). Sprint is currently the only major US wireless provider that still offers a truly unlimited plan. T-Mobile offers an unlimited data plan, but throttles the speeds of users who exceed 2GB per month.
