Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has set another sales record. The new first-person shooter sold over 6.5 million copies in the U.S. and U.K. alone in its first 24 hours, publisher Activision said Friday, raking in an estimated $400 million.

The previous day-one sales record, set by Call of Duty: Black Ops last year, was 5.6 million units. In 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 set the mark at 4.7 million.

"Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement.

Activision also said that in honor of Veterans' Day it would donate $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment, a charity organization that helps provide job placement to veterans.
