There are several great apps for the iPad which turn it into an amp and pedals for an electric guitar, but the iPB-10 Programmable Pedalboard goes one better, by adding a hardware stompbox to the mix.
Pedalboard, as I'll call it to save burning extra pixels on your screens, is a multi-effects box without a brain. This is supplied by slotting in your iPad and firing up the $2 companion app.
The skeuomorphic design shows pictures of well-known pedals, which is a boon to existing players but will become increasingly redundant as hardware pedals eventually disappear. What is hot is that you get 87 pedals, 54 amps, 26 cabinets in software, along with ten hardware pedals to control them.
It even includes two different Wah pedals (and yes, one is the Cry Baby).
Pedals are adjusted via on-screen swipes and twists, and you can store various combinations of pedals, amps and setting and switch between them instantly.
At $500 it's not cheap, but you do get some pro-level features: Round back you'll find inputs and outputs for effects loops, a quarter-inch guitar input, and amp loop, footswitch jack and stereo XLR outputs, along with USB and DC power ports.
Finally, the iPad slips inside and connects to a 30-pin dock cable, and then a cover swings down to hold it in place. This should mean that it will be forward-compatible with future iPads.
