9/10

If you associate animated GIFs only with the blinking banner ads of yore (by which we mean 2010), you should know that times have changed. This app delivers the expressiveness of a video clip in files as small and easily shared as a photo. Capture a series of pics by tapping the screen at a steady cadence — every second or so. You can take as many pictures as your iPhone will hold, but three will usually do (try the classic "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" for a quick three-framer). Thumbnails stack up on the top of the screen. A slider lets you find the optimal playback speed — slow for a stop-motion look, fast for a Buster Keaton-type action sequence. Some surefire hits: friends dancing, babies making faces, pets being pets.
