For those that missed Sunday night's episode of The Simpsons, there was a brilliant "couch gag" in the opening credits: the Simpson family animated by The Ren & Stimpy Show mastermind John Kricfalusi.
The bit (above) was bizarre, awkward, weird (yes that's Homer pouring a beer directly into his cranium), and wonderful. Basically, it's all the things Kricfalusi's work is known for.
"This project was the most fun I’ve had in years," Kricfalusi told Cartoon Brew. "It has really hammered home (to me) the importance of animation in animation. I think it’s possible to bring animation back to this country and make the core of it fun again, not be a mere tertiary addition to some high concept or executive’s 'vision.'"
Kricfalusi's contribution isn't the first time the show's creators have asked an outside artist to work on the opening sequence for The Simpsons. Street artist Banksy took the reins last year and turned the credits into a commentary on animation factories overseas.
Check out Kricfalusi's handiwork above, then head over to his blog for some production art from the project.
