Video: Hugo Is Martin Scorsese's 3-D Dream Come True

The director of Goodfellas and Raging Bull shoots in 3-D for the first time for his upcoming ’30s-era film about a boy living in a train station who sets out to solve a mystery.

Who knew?

The video suggests that America’s most revered filmmaker has swapped out the brutal beauty of The Departed and Raging Bull for a kinder, gentler brand of storytelling. With Hugo, Scorsese departs radically from the violence-drenched tone of masterpieces like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas to make his most kid-friendly movie to date.

The Hugo teaser sets the stage — 1930s-era Paris — for a tale about a resourceful waif who lives in a train station. The video rolls out locomotives gone wild, steampunk-style clockworks and robots as Hugo (played by Asa Butterfield) tries to solve a mystery involving his late father with a little help from a young friend (Kick-Ass‘ outstanding Chloe Grace Moretz) and an eccentric inventor (Jude Law).

“It’s a story that’s very emotional and at times funny,” says Scorsese.

Hugo, based on Brian Selznick’s award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, opens Nov. 23.
