My son (12) has been playing within the Lego Universe for the past month. It's an MMO. There is a free membership available, and I'm considering buying the paid membership for him for his birthday next month. On a safety level, players can't use their own name. They pick from a list of funny combinations of words as their player name. There is a chat, but that isn't available for free members, so I'm not sure how that will go if my youngster gets the paid account. There is a forum just for parents on the Lego Universe where they will answer any and all concerns. The FAQ for parents is comprehensive and made me feel that they would do their best to keep their online world safe for kids to play. Since I don't play it myself, I asked my son to write a review:

I have been enjoying Lego Universe free version for the past month. It is fun to be able to see that you are not the only person playing and to be able to friend people and invite people to teams (go near the player then press control, on top right click invite to team or friend request.) I like how even though you can’t complete the overall mission you can do mini-missions and still get new gear. On the free version you can only go from Avant Gardens to The Block Yard and back, but it still is fun to make your own house (or park, garden, castle…etc.) and fight crazy monsters.

Some fighting moves I learned are double jump then attack, and jump attack. The double jump does splash damage (hits more than one enemy) and the single jump is good for closing a distance fast and attacking. Doing quick builds (holding shift while next to jumping parts) is fun and just traveling around the islands.

The annoying thing is that you have to pay to continue the overall mission, and not being able to collar any animals. These animals can help you in battle. There are also some rocket launch pads reserved for paid membership. But even with these limitations I still like playing.

When/if he gets the paid account, I'll let you know how that goes!
