Trailer: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Oozes Cold War Suspense

It would be easy to screw up the movie adaptation of John le Carré’s complex espionage saga Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but this suspenseful new trailer suggests that director Tomas Alfredson and his heavyweight cast got it right.

It would be easy to screw up the movie adaptation of John le Carré’s complex espionage saga Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but this suspenseful new trailer suggests that director Tomas Alfredson and his heavyweight cast got it right.

“There’s a rotten apple … and we have to find it,” the character named Control (played by John Hurt) says to agent Jim Prideaux (Green Lantern‘s Mark Strong). To find the Soviet double agent that’s been spying for the Russians during the Cold War, British intelligence service MI6 recruits brilliant ex-agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman).

Swedish filmmaker Alfredson previously directed tense 2008 vampire thriller Let the Right One In. Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises‘ Bane), Colin Firth and Toby Jones (Captain America) co-star.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy debuts at the Venice Film Festival this weekend before opening in England on Sept. 16 and the United States on Dec. 9.
