On the heels of the announcement of the winners of the MoonBots 2.0 competition, the X Prize foundation has also announced the winners of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup Video Challenge Contest for students, associated with the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X Prize.
A small number of Bay area student teams competed in this video challenge, creating short videos that identified problems and limitations with current cleanup and remediation techniques. Students were asked to exhibit the impacts of oil spills, while highlighting innovative solutions. Finally, teams addressed ways to reduce the likelihood of spills in the future.
The Grand Prize winners were a group representing the Chabot Space and Science Center. Their video, which examined the Exxon Valdez disaster, will be optimized and shown at the California Academy of Sciences' "Science in Action" exhibit. A team from the Youth Watershed Challenge Project was recognized for their outstanding scientific investigation of the Deepwater Horizon accident and the team representing the Oakland Zoo won an award for their creative presentation entitled "The Problem with Oil." Congratulations to these inspiring groups of budding scientists!
