Nintendo sold 235,000 3DS units in the U.S. this August as a result of a drastic price drop, the gamemaker said Friday.
On August 12, Nintendo slashed the price of its glasses-free 3-D portable handheld, lowering it from $250 to $170 in an attempt to boost disappointing early sales. The publisher said it sold 185,000 units in the 19 days following the price drop, a 260 percent increase over what it calls "the comparable 19-day time period in July."
According to a sales tracking report from research group NPD, Nintendo 3DS was the second-best-selling piece of gaming hardware in August. Microsoft said that its Xbox 360 took first place, moving 308,000 units over the course of the month.
