Trailer: HBO Documentary Profiles Self-Taught Superheroes

They wear masks and fight crime far from the pulpy pages of Marvel or DC comic books. As documented in the new Superheroes film, a network of real-life Kick-Ass-style vigilantes make their own costumes and take on evil-doers in cities throughout North America.

The trailer, embedded above, profiles self-appointed public defenders including San Diego’s Mr. Xtreme; Vancouver, British Columbia crime-fighter Thanatos; Master Legend of Orlando, Florida; and Lucid, who’s shown practicing his bow-and-arrow skills on the roof of a Brooklyn apartment building.

Following a screening last week at Comic-Con International, director Michael Barnett’s Superheroes debuts Aug. 8 at 9 p.m./8 p.m. Central on HBO.
