It's a romance only a sci-fi fan could love: Scientist gets mangled in a factory accident, falls in love with his new prosthetic leg and decides to replace the rest of his body with shiny new bionic parts.
That's the gist of Machine Man – the clever new novel by Max Barry coming out August 9.
To celebrate the book's release, Wired.com is teaming with Random House/Vintage Books to give away Barry's original manuscript, complete with hand-written notations, plus a load of other treats.
Barry's fan-friendly gesture is in keeping with Machine Man's crowdsourced development. Barry posted bits and pieces of the novel on his website for 27 weeks. Incorporating the commenters' feedback into the narrative as it unfolded, the Australian author then hammered the collective effort into final shape as a 189-page paperback.
In addition to the grand prize manuscript, five prize packages will be awarded to runner-up entrants, who will receive a free copy of Machine Man along with a set of refrigerator magnets bearing the Victorian-era muscle man cover art.
To enter the contest, submit an email address at the publisher's sweepstakes site.
Entries must be received by August 9, 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Winners will be randomly selected by Random House and notified on or around August 10.
